Prof.L Balachandran was the first head of the department, whose vision changed the face of the department by opening a good reference library and by achieving tremedous progress in the results.

Cost accounting was the specialization offered from 1980 to 1996, then changed to Co-operation as the opportunities were numerous in primary and district co-operative banks for the commerce graduates.

It is also noteworthy that the department was selected by UGC as "Corefaculty" department and sanctioned a vocational course in Tourism named B.Com Tourism and Travel Management in the academic year 2001.
